Wallpaper room by room
Are you thinking about decorating with wallpaper? Wallpaper can really transform a room and enhance its desired mood. But with a plethora of gorgeous options to choose from, picking the right wallpaper can feel overwhelming at times. Here are some things to consider when choosing wallpaper, room by room!

Should it be muted and understated, or vibrant and patterned? Minimalist or maximalist? Scandinavian or industrial? Rustic or luxurious? Or, perhaps an eclectic combination of several styles? Colours, patterns and textures all play a part in finding your unique style expression and putting your personal stamp on a room. It's important to listen to your gut feeling and remember to have fun with it. So without further ado, let's start with the hallway.
Wallpaper in the hallway
The hallway gives the first impression of your home (but it's also a place we spend very little time in). Therefore, you can afford to experiment a little here, especially if you have a larger space. Why not go for a romantic, dainty floral wallpaper, or a realistic brick wallpaper with a concrete finish? Shades of green and blue convey a calm feeling, while yellow adds a cheerful touch and red colours create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. If you have a smaller hallway, it's a good idea to go for light colours, or simply timeless white to open things up. (It is then best combined with something darker along the floor, such as a panel, where we take our shoes off.)
Wallpaper in the kitchen
The kitchen is the heart of the home for many, and wallpaper can make it even more inviting. Perhaps you want to create a calm and soothing atmosphere, opt for a bold and dynamic look, or go for a more stripped down, industrial vibe. The choice is yours! Just remember to consider the remaining decor, such as cabinet doors, work surfaces and kitchen appliances, when choosing kitchen wallpaper to ensure that the overall impression doesn’t appear cluttered.
Wallpaper in the living room
The living room gives you plenty of scope to create a unique and personal atmosphere. Go for a striking wallpaper mural for a real wow-effect, choose a photo wallpaper to give the room depth and dimension, or create a lovely focal point with a feature wall in your favourite corner. When it comes to patterns and colour schemes, just about anything goes, although we're seeing a lot of botanical influences at the moment. And for a luxurious boutique hotel feel, opt for dark colours complemented by precious metals. You can create a smooth transition from one room to an adjoining room by colour-coordinating the rest of the decor.
Wallpaper in the bedroom
The bedroom is your private sanctuary, and is favourably decorated in cool blues, greens or pinks with grey undertones to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Go for muted patterns paired with the room’s furnishings to create a harmonious look. Read our guide to choosing the right bedroom wallpaper her.
Wallpaper in the kid's room
A child's room is a place for sleeping, but also for playing and learning, and eventually a place for friends to visit. And unless you're planning to redecorate every five years as your child grows, it's a good idea to think long-term. Bring in cute, playful characters from the fairy tales, perhaps as a feature wall behind the bed, or to create a special play corner. Nature-inspired and small floral patterns in matte pastels are a great choice, as they usually stand the test of time.
Wallpaper in the guest room/office
The guest room is once again a place to be creative, or simply to try out a new trend. Here you can go for the big floral wallpaper you didn't really dare to use in the bedroom. If you're using the room as a workspace, it's a good idea to choose a motif and colour scheme that won't be too distracting. A feature wall is always a safe bet, in this case.
Things to keep in mind - 9 quick tips!
- Keep in mind that light colours open up, while dark colours tend to shrink (subject to placement.)
- Don't be afraid of large patterns! A two-colour large-patterned wallpaper is usually perceived as calmer than a small-patterned wallpaper in several colours.
- Depending on the colour, a small-patterned wallpaper can make a smaller room feel bigger.
- A feature wall stands out more than if all four walls had been wallpapered - perfect for creating focal points.
- Change the room’s proportions! Go for a vertical pattern wallpaper to make a room appear taller (ideally combined with a white or lighter colour ceiling). Conversely, by choosing a horizontal pattern, you can make a room appear wider.
- Large rooms appear cosier with vivid colours and large patterns.
- Narrow rooms can look wider by using darker colours on the short walls combined with lighter shades on the side walls.
- Worried that your statement wallpaper will command too much attention in your room? Soften the expression with solid-coloured curtains, for example.
- Start by taping up a wallpaper sample to the wall and let it sit for a few days before deciding!
